TARZANA

Tarzana is a largely residential Local community on the site of a former ranch owned by author Edgar Rice Burroughs. It’s named right after Burroughs’ storybook jungle character hero, Tarzan.

Tarzana is a lot more household-centric compared to the surrounding county with 35.47 % of the homes made up of married people with children. The county average for homes married with small children is 35.12%.

HISTORY OF TARZANA

Spanish settlers and missionaries who set up the San Fernando Mission occupied the region now known as Tarzana in 1797. Absorbed by Mexico later, the land was ceded to America in 1848 by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo following the Mexican-American Warfare. Under US rule, it advanced into some large cattle ranches owned by local elites. Traders took over in the 1870s, turning grazing into large-scale wheat farm operation.

The area was bought in 1909 by the Los Angeles Suburban Homes Firm. LA Times founder and publisher General Harrison Gray Otis invested in the company and likewise personally acquired 550 acres (2.2 km2) in the center of modern day Tarzana.

In February 1919, Edgar Rice Burroughs, writer of the favorite Tarzan novels, found his way to California along with his family, relocating from Oak Park, Illinois. He and his family had wintered in Southern California twice before, and he found the weather ideal. On March 1, Burroughs purchased Otis’s tract and built Tarzana Ranch. Burroughs subdivided and sold the land for domestic development with neighboring small farms following suit.
